Description
This Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe is the perfect way to embrace the flavors of fall with minimal effort. A sweet, spiced spread made from apples, sugar, and warm spices, cooked low and slow until caramelized perfection. Great on toast, pancakes, or right off the spoon!
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 to 8 medium-sized apples (about 3 pounds), peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1 cup granulated sugar (200 g), or to taste
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (100 g)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2 g)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (0.5 g)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice (0.5 g)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 ml)
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30 ml)
Instructions
- Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples into small uniform pieces.
- Add the apples to the slow cooker along with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
- Stir to evenly coat the apples with the spices and sugars.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 8 to 10 hours until apples are deeply caramelized and soft.
- Use an immersion blender to puree the apple mixture until smooth (or blend in batches using a regular blender).
- Return the puree to the slow cooker and cook uncovered for an additional 1 hour to thicken.
- Let cool, then store in clean, airtight jars in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for longer storage.
Notes
Mixing sweet and tart apples like Fuji, Honeycrisp, and Granny Smith creates a complex flavor. Taste and adjust sweetness and spices as you go. For variation, try ginger, cardamom, or even a touch of cayenne for heat. Use honey or maple syrup as natural sweetener alternatives.
