- 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup (220 g) brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 medium apples (about 4 cups), peeled, cored, and diced
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons (15 g) cornstarch
- 1 cup (240 ml) caramel sauce, plus extra for drizzling
- Sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
- Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Press mixture into baking dish and bake for 10-12 minutes.
- In another bowl, toss diced apples with lemon juice, cornstarch, and a pinch of cinnamon.
- Spread apple mixture evenly over baked crust.
- Drizzle caramel sauce generously over apples.
- Crumble reserved crust mixture on top of apples.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until topping is golden and apples are tender.
- Cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
- Drizzle with extra caramel sauce and sprinkle with sea salt before serving.
Notes
For best flavor, use a mix of tart and sweet apples such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji. Allow bars to cool before slicing for clean cuts.
