- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 5 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon hot water or milk
- ½ cup sour cream (optional)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C) and grease your baking pan.
- Cream the butter and sugar for 4–5 minutes until fluffy and pale.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
- Gradually add sifted flour and salt, alternating with sour cream if using. Mix in vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, mix ¼ of the vanilla batter with cocoa powder and hot water to form the chocolate swirl.
- Pour half the vanilla batter into the pan. Add spoonfuls of chocolate batter, then top with remaining vanilla batter.
- Swirl gently with a knife or skewer.
- Bake for 60–75 minutes, depending on your pan. Check doneness with a toothpick.
- Cool 10 minutes in pan, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For bold color and flavor, use Dutch-processed or black cocoa powder. Wrap cooled cake in plastic to preserve moisture.
